Happy New Year!

The new year brings a fresh start for everyone which is always something to look forward to. So why not take up a new hobby? I feel 2012 is the ultimate year for hand made with programmes becoming popular such as Kirstie's Handmade Britain and even quilting magazines popping up on our shelves. So why not give this a go yourself?

Homemade Strawberry jam:
Simon and I made this for christmas and bought some cute little jars from lakeland and decorated them with ribbon and doilies from poundland. They went down a treat and everyone loved the tiny jars of homemade jam. This recipe is from The Vintage Tea Party Book.

  • 400g strawberries halved
  • 450g caster sugar
  • 4 tsp lemon juice
Makes 2x 375g jars

1. First sterilize the jam jars by washing them with hot soapy water and then rinsing them in warm water. Pre heat the oven to 140oc/ gas mark 1 and stand the jars upside down on the rack in the oven for 30 minutes.

2. Add the strawverries and sugar in a medium sized saucepan and simmer over a medium high heat, stirring frequently. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 1 hour, or until thick, stirring only occasionally. Remove from heat and add the lemon juice (this helps the jam to set).

3. Pour into warm jars, seal and allow to cool then store in the fridge. The jam should keep for 6 months.
